What does PEDIATRIC Dentistry involve?

We love helping our littlest patients build a strong foundation for lifelong oral health with age-appropriate care, including cleanings, fillings, pulpotomies, stainless steel crowns, baby teeth extractions, and silver diamine fluoride treatments.

Pediatric Fillings

At Lavin Family Dental, Dr. Lavin uses tooth-colored fillings to treat cavities in your child’s teeth. When a baby tooth develops a cavity, we do everything we can to preserve it, protecting the tooth’s appearance, function, and the space needed for the future permanent tooth. Our gentle, child-focused approach helps keep your little one’s smile healthy and strong, providing durable, natural-looking fillings that prevent further decay.

Pulpotomies and Stainless Steel Crowns

If your child has a deep cavity in a baby tooth, a pulpotomy may be necessary to save the tooth. The pulp contains the tooth’s nerve and soft tissue, and when decay reaches this area, it can cause significant pain. During a pulpotomy, Dr. Lavin removes the infected or damaged tissue and seals the tooth to preserve its function. A stainless steel crown is then placed to restore strength and provide long-term protection. The crown will stay in place until the baby tooth naturally falls out, at which point the crown will come off with it.

Baby Tooth Extraction

In some cases, a baby tooth extraction may be necessary if the tooth is severely decayed, damaged, or causing discomfort or other issues in the mouth. Dr. Lavin takes great care to ensure the procedure is as gentle and comfortable as possible, using safe techniques to remove the tooth. When a baby tooth is not yet ready to fall out naturally, an extraction can help maintain proper spacing for the permanent teeth to come in correctly. After the procedure, Dr. Lavin will provide clear post-care instructions to support healing and keep your child’s smile healthy.

SDF (Silver Diamine Fluoride)

Silver Diamine Fluoride (SDF) is a painless, non-invasive treatment used to stop cavities from getting worse in young children. Dr. Lavin applies SDF directly to the affected area with a small brush and dries it with a cotton ball. This treatment helps harden the cavity and prevent further decay. This quick and effective option is ideal for children who may be anxious or unable to sit through more invasive procedures, helping protect their teeth with minimal discomfort.
